Our Mission and History

The Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute (PPRI) raises money for research into Parkinson’s Disease.

This is our mission:

“To fund research into the causes, treatment and cure of Parkinson’s disease, primarily at the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre at the University of British Columbia”.

The Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre, the organization we support, runs an interdisciplinary program dedicated to the treatment of and research into Parkinson’s Disease and related disorders. The Centre is a world leader in its field.

Both organizations are based in Vancouver, Canada. Both are committed to discovering the causes of and cure for Parkinson’s and believe this will be accomplished through research.

They are building an environment that attracts, supports and retains world class scientists and clinicians and are working together to advance research that provides an improved quality of life for people with Parkinson’s and their families.

The Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute was founded in 1991 by the Hon. John Nichol when he learned that the Movement Disorder Centre (now the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre) was having trouble funding its research program.

He recognized that there were other charities that support Parkinson’s and they have broad mandates. He believed this new Institute should focus on only funding research being conducted at the Centre of Excellence at UBC.

During its first 20 years PPRI has operated primarily as a “no frills”, volunteer-driven organization that minimizes overhead so that virtually every dollar donated would go to its intended purpose – research.

PPRI does not seek peer-reviewed grants but relies on the review of an external panel of experts to conduct a periodic evaluation of the Centre’s overall research program and each specific project.

PPRI supports the overall performance of the Centre rather than developing the scientific expertise necessary to evaluate the merits of a project in advance of funding.

Donors to PPRI are informed of the Centre’s progress via an annual Scientific Review presentation.
