Leading experts around the world are collaborating to get beyond the mysteries of Stanley Park TotemsParkinson’s. Here in Vancouver, the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre is leading the way.

Located at the Vancouver Health Sciences Centre and the University of British Columbia, its programs are dedicated to research into and treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.

The Centre’s research focuses on three primary areas:

  • Why do people get Parkinson’s Disease?
  • Why do specific nerve cells die?
  • What are the best possible treatment strategies?
  • The Centre's research and clinical care involve:

  • Finding a cause and a cure
  • Improved and early diagnosis
  • Delivering the highest level of clinical care
  • Specialized physician training
  • Patient counseling
  • The Centre’s resources include:

  • Leading neurologists who specialize in diagnosing, treating and studying Parkinson’s and related disorders
  • Expert scientists who know what to ask and can design the required experiments
  • A dedicated out-patient clinic

  • Here doctors and nurses who see patients also conduct research involving basic and clinical sciences. They do so in close partnership with scientists and brain imaging experts.

No other centre in Canada undertakes this level of combined research and clinical science under one roof.

THE CENTRE IS RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY – AND INTERNATIONALLY

Leaders in neurological research agree that concentration of effort at a single location provides powerful advantages in allowing close and continuous interaction between scientists, physicians, nurses and patients.

It is this physical and intellectual integration that makes the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre effective and unique.

In a review undertaken by the Centre’s external advisory board, prominent Canadian and American scientists had this to say:

“... (the Centre) is the top-ranked centre in the world for in vivo studies of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

The Centre combines outstanding basic neuroscience with state-of-the-art imaging technology and superb research and care. The program is recognized internationally for its exceptional research and its contributions shape Parkinson’s disease research and treatment internationally.

…this program was the best of its kind on an international scale; not one of the best, but simply the best, the most productive, the
    most creative.”
